Two new GST guides for small business

There are two new guides to help small business 'catch up' on ABN and GST registration and to prepare for their first Business Activity Statement (BAS), said Chris Jordan, Chairman of The New Tax System Advisory Board.

The two new publications are a two-page Ready for the GST? leaflet, and a four-page Quick Guide to BAS and PAYG

  • Ready for the GST? will help businesses who have not yet applied for an ABN or registered for the GST. It includes advice on reporting to the ATO, re-pricing and adjusting invoices under The New Tax System.
  • The Quick Guide to PAYG and BAS gives an overview of Pay As You Go, key features of the BAS and business tips.

"The guides are particularly timely with many businesses preparing for their first BAS, if they are ABN/GST registered, or their first Instalment Activity Statement, if they are not GST-registered," Mr Jordan said.

"Both publications are short and easy to read and provide an overview of the tax obligations of small business and the business skills they should employ for an appropriate outcome.

"The publications are being printed in 25 languages and are available from GST Assist 13 30 88 and are available on the web at www.gststartup.gov.au

"Copies will also be available through the ATO, ACCC, ATSIC Field Staff and your local GST Signpost Officers," Mr Jordan said.

In addition to the two new publications, free BAS/PAYG courses are running nationwide from 31 July. For information visit www.gststartup.gov.au or register on 1800 351 754.
