FREE GST Help for Ethnic Business and Community Groups

The GST is around the corner and it’ll be here to stay. Chris Jordan, Chair of the New Tax System Advisory Board, said "GST is going to affect business, whether or not English is your first language. Twenty five per cent of small businesses in Australia are owned or operated by people who speak a language other than English at home. The Government is committed to providing GST assistance to all Australians."

Today, Mr Jordan launched the government’s GST Start-Up Assistance Office’s suite of translated products and services urging all Australian business operators to start preparing now for the GST, "First things first. If you haven’t yet registered for your ABN and/or GST— do it now."

"There’s plenty of free information available to help you make a smooth transition. If you’re more comfortable speaking to someone in your own language, GST Assist 13 30 88, has a free interpreter service. Once you’ve dialed 13 30 88, listen to the introduction and press ‘9’ on your phone for the interpreter service."

"GST Assist can help you take the first steps to adjust the way you do business when The New Tax Systems comes into effect on 1 July."

The GST Start-Up Assistance Office has developed several programmes to get small and medium businesses, community groups and educational bodies ready for the GST.

The Direct Assistance programme provides a $200 certificate to business owners who have registered for an ABN and the GST. Mr Jordan explained, "Included in the package is access to a range of discounts in addition to the certificate. To make sure you maximise the benefit from your certificate, register early and take advantage of the translated products and services available from GST Assist on 13 30 88."

Key ethnic business and community leaders are being invited to attend a GST Business Skills briefing session and luncheon held in every capital city over the next few weeks. Australian Taxation Office technical adviser, Su McCluskey, will also be present to provide ATO technical input and expertise for a Questions and Answer session after the breifing.
