Small Business Urged "Register Now to Receive Certificate"

More than 1000 suppliers of goods and services, many offering significant discounts, have registered to supply small businesses with goods and services needed to get GST-ready.

The products and any discounts can be obtained by redeeming the $200 Direct Assistance certificates being delivered to businesses registered for the GST from today.

The Chairman of the New Tax System Advisory Board, Chris Jordan, said with the Y2K bug, the Christmas rush and New Years celebrations over, businesses were now focusing on how the GST might affect them.

Mr Jordan said the costs involved to operate in a GST environment might be significantly lower than what had been stated in some media reports.

"Not every business will have to buy a new computer, new software or seek training or advice, but businesses should see the availability of these certificates as an opportunity to make their business better and considering all the other help being made available, such as tax write-offs, this would be an ideal time to do so."

Businesses registered for the GST will receive a list of first-round registered suppliers and details about additional discounts on GST-related products and services.

"The actual value of the certificate is beyond $200, the true value is considerably higher because many suppliers are offering discounts averaging 15-20 per cent, with some discounts up to 80 per cent. This is on top of an immediate tax write-off for GST-related equipment and software for businesses with a turnover of less than $10 million," Mr Jordan explained.

"Already, over 1,000 suppliers have registered with the GST Start-Up Assistance Office, with over 6,000 GST-related goods and services. It’s not too late to become a registered supplier, we expect up to 15,000 suppliers to register between now and June 30. Registration details are also available on the website at www.gststartup.gov.au.

"I would encourage all small businesses to plan early, seek information (GST Assist Helpline 13 30 88) and assess the impact of GST on their business. There is plenty of free GST assistance out there: Call the Helpline, contact your industry association or visit the GST Start-Up Assistance website at www.gststartup.gov.au. An ongoing list of registered suppliers, their GST equipment and services can be found on the website or by calling 13 30 88."
